After Roborock S6 full review, then from his little brother the Roborock S4, here comes the last opus of the brand: the Roborock S5 Max. Taking most of the technical characteristics of its illustrious predecessor, the S5, this new device seems to have, on paper in any case, all the tools to establish itself as one of the best robot vacuums of the market ! While waiting for its novelties announced at CES 2020, the new S6 Pure robot and the H6 stick vacuum cleaner, Roborock lent us a copy of the latter that we had every opportunity to measure with the rest of the siblings. Here, without further ado, our full review of the Roborock S5 Max.
Roborock S5 Max: a proven design
Created 2014, Roborock is still young, but as you can see in our previous tests, the Beijing-based company has already proven itself with models that are as attractive as they are efficient. The company has in fact set itself the ambition of developing and creating practical and reliable technological products with an always meticulous design… And it shows!
Here, no revolution in the matter: the Roborock S5 Max more or less resumes the appearance of its predecessor but the brand does not hide it since it is a supercharged version of the latter. This new robot vacuum cleaner therefore has a circular shape of 35 cm in diameter and measure 9.65 cm high, proportions quite in the average which let predict that this beautiful device will be able to slip almost everywhere. Available in two finishes, black or white, it is the latter that we had the opportunity to test.
If Roborock does not make any fancy on this model in terms of design, it must be admitted that it remains more than successful, its sparkling white dress being highlighted by an elegant metal gray border and a discreet roborock logo. Its Laser rangefinder, which classically takes place on the upper third of the device, is also seen circled in metal gray, painting finally resumed on the robot's power button. It's chic, it's clean, it makes you want to go further!

Display 3.5 kg on the empty scale (against 3.6 kg for the S6 and 3.8 kg for the S4), the Roborock S5 Max proudly sports an LDS or Laser rangefinder. We expected no less from the brand that was made a real specialty of navigation. Because, it should be said, Roborock excels in this area as we have been able to prove to us by the two previous tests. This rangefinder is conventionally composed of two cells, one emitting the laser and the other intended to recover the signal. The whole is nicely underlined by a red rotating part, Roborock signature, which gives its robot vacuum cleaners a hyper High-Tech character.
We also find, on the top, a power button. This is the same as on the S5 / S50 and offers the features On Off (a long press allows the robot to switch off completely) and back to the station. It's simple but, you probably already know, a breathing machine worthy of the name is essentially controlled via its application.
Now let's see what is hidden under the robot's hood: the dust bin ! But not only because, unlike the Roborock S4 previously tested, the location for the cleaning brush has been retained. That's good, that will prevent us from looking for it everywhere.
A capacity of 460 mL, the bin equipped with HEPA filter is around the industry average and one of the most comfortable in the Roborock range, on par with the Roborock S4. Sadly, once again, no anti-return tab and nothing obstructs the inlet orifice, so be careful not to overturn it when removing it. Well, we have to admit it, we are quite picky and this is not a very annoying flaw on a daily basis.
Let's move on to the major innovation of this model: the tank! Because, yes, Roborock has finally endowed its 2 in 1 robot a real container for water. Of a 290 mL capacity, it promises us to finally be able to consider washing several parts with an adjustable water volume without having to recharge it, this is excellent news. The brand announces that it will clean a 65 m² apartment more than 3 times or a 200 m² house In one time. It includes a new ultra precise peristaltic pump (or roller pump). Well !
Better yet, this one is actually made up of two parts, so one looks like the tank fitted to the Roborock S6, but it is actually a new spring mop system. Why spring loaded? Quite simply to try to respond to the main shortcoming of 2 in 1 robots : the lack of support exerted on the mop. We will see in use if this system is efficient.
Le Roborock S5 Max is like its counterparts with a front bumper, and endowed with side sensors...
As regards sensors, it should be noted that the Roborock S5 Max not lacking since it has no less than thirteen in total, four of which are called "Cliff sensors" that allow him not to fall down the stairs and to estimate the slopes. Let's turn the device over to take a look. If you want to know more about their usefulness, we invite you to read our file on how to choose the best robot vacuum cleaner, and you will see that this S5 Max ticks all the boxes!
Another good news, Roborock has given its S5 Max the new side brush created by DuPont, which allows it to dislodge the most stubborn dirt and has a density improved by 250% compared to those of the Roborock S5. With some rotations up to 1350 rpm, it also benefits from a speed that adapts to the area to be cleaned!
Regarding the central brush, we find that of the S50 and S6. Roborock didn't kick her forward this time. Of type floating brush, it alternates between plastic strips and synthetic bristles arranged v-shaped and visibly has the same density as on the S4, ie more than on the S50. Hopefully this won't impact the suction power though.
As for the wheels, they are the same as those of the Roborock S6 with a sacred clothe non-slip coating well notched and a clearance allowing the robot to easily overcome obstacles up to 2 centimeters. It is better than the Roborock S4 (1.8 cm) and equivalent to the Roborock S6, which bodes well that the robot will cross these famous 2 cm. We do not notice any play or noise when calling on them. Good point.
Finally, the Roborock S5 Max obviously comes with a charging base. More compact than that of the S6, it is the one we have already seen on the S5. The robot lands on it in forward motion and presents its two pins on the two small contactors. Finally, the loading dock comes with the traditional plastic support to prevent the robot from wetting the ground where it is parked. An excellent idea that we unfortunately do not find frequently in other manufacturers.
Before proceeding with the tests, let's take a look at the traditional technical sheet ...

Roborock S5 Max: a lot of options
An efficient application
Used to using the Xiaomi Home application, this time we let ourselves be tempted by the Roborock application. Why? Because the brand taught us, and it seems logical to say the least, that the tracking and updating of its devices is better there. Focusing on performance, it does not particularly bother us to have an additional application, especially as you will see, the installation was disconcertingly simple.
At the opening, in fact, we fall directly on a panel we inform that Roborock S5 Max has just been detected, a phenomenon that we had already known on its big brother the S6 which is detected thanks to Bluetooth. It's really practical, if all brands could do the same! It only remains to inform the identifiers of our home Wi-Fi network et accept the general conditions of use… Something that we obviously did even though they were in German. We forgive Roborock, the robot was not yet marketed at the time of our test.
A minute later, we discover the interface of the application, which means that the installation is a real breeze! To our knowledge, Roborock is the only manufacturer who has managed to simplify this process so much and we can only congratulate them. Let's see what this application offers us.
A minute later, we discover the interface of the application, which means that the installation is a real breeze! The Alexians
Unlike the Xiaomi Home app that we had used so far to test the brand's robots, here the interface is much simpler and more intuitive. The home screen presents a large visual of the robot and provides access to its various settings.
- At the top right, a small "+" allows you to add different models,
- In the center, finally, you can enter the heart of the beast and access all the settings of the S5 Max.
- At the bottom, a navigation bar provides access to the space Notifications, To thecentral screen, or yours User profile.
Let's go a little into the robot's settings where we find a screen that is rather familiar to us with in the center the map of our home and the main functions of the robot.
- Three areas are displayed at the top: "Cleaning area" with the cleaned area in m², a gauge in "Remaining battery" and the duration of the last cleaning in "Cleaning time".
- In the middle, you find the map. This will only be recorded after a first complete cleaning of your accommodation. Let the robot do it, even if it is a bit long, you will later appreciate having a complete map.
- At the bottom right of the map, a small pictogram allows you to choose the suction power delivered by the Roborock S5 Max: silent, balanced, turbo or max.
- Below the map are three options: " room " which allows you to send the robot to a particular room, " all " which starts an automatic cleaning and leaves the robot free to do as it sees fit, "Zone" to select the perimeter of your choice.
- At the bottom, finally, two big buttons allow you to send the robot to recharge or start and pause cleaning.
Top right, take place the classics three small dots allowing you to access the robot's advanced parameters.
- Dance « vacuum cleaner settings« , various options are offered such asmapping recording, Fashion Carpet (for more powerful suction on carpets and rugs, etc.), the time zone setting, NDP mode to "do not disturb", Car where you can program automations (we will come back to this), Accessories and maintenance which gives you information on the usage time and the remaining life of the robot's main organs, the remote control that allows you to transform your smartphone as a remote control and direct the robot, and finally an option to locate the robot if it got lost in your 450m² or more likely if you cannot find it because it got stuck under a bed, for example.
Roborock S5 Max: maximum efficiency
Let us now get to the heart of the matter, namely the Roborock S5 Max full review, and see if it is as effective as the other models of the brand. Located between S4 and S6, the S5 Max is a high-end robot since marketed at the price of 499 €, is it worth the expense?
Navigation: a house specialty
If there's anything that sets a Roborock apart from another robot vacuum, it's navigation. It must be said that in this area, the brand excels, and the Roborock S5 Max is no exception to the rule. With a Laser rangefinder and wrapped in 13 sensors, the mapping is still as precise and the movements of the robot efficient.
Movements also a little different from many of its congeners since the S5 Max performs them lengthwise! An excellent idea that allows him to be even faster since it limits turns and covers a larger area in less time.
[…] The S5 Max now performs them lengthwise! The Alexians
Once our apartment has been discovered and the plan recorded, the S5 Max impresses with its velocity. Almost never hitting the obstacles that present themselves to him, he skirts the walls with skill and precision, approaching them to less than a centimeter, which allows him to dislodge all the dirt.
The in-house application offers the same functionalities as Xiaomi Home… And even more ! Indeed, at the time of writing, only the latter allows us to select parts and offers the S5 Max the possibility of delimit washing areas. In addition, we found it more fluid, more airy, in two words: more pleasant! We therefore strongly advise you to use the Roborock app, especially since the manufacturer told us that it made it possible to obtain the latest updates much more quickly and also offered the company the possibility of making better monitoring of its products. Why then deprive yourself of it?
We therefore strongly advise you to use the Roborock app The Alexians
Washing: a finally comfortable tank
Le Roborock S5 Max also stands out from the rest of the range by its largely optimized washing capacities ! With a finally comfortable 280 ml water tank, double that of the Roborock S6, this robot mop is now able to clean a 200 ㎡ house in one go.
Its washing system differs as it is made up of two parts: a reservoir et a cleaning plate where the mop is housed. The first is used to receive water, of course, and the second to diffuse it on the microfiber. This second part includes a system of peristaltic pump used in particular in hospital infusion systems and designed to withstand use for more than 1 hours.
Application level, it is possible to very simply choose the desired quantity of water using pictograms, for example low flow on stone floors or high for dirty kitchens. When the wash starts, water is pumped to moisten the wash area.
Another interesting innovation, the S5 Max deactivates its pump when it passes over an area already washed. In addition, this "cleaning plate" allows the mop not to be permanently wet. Thus, once parked, it dries quickly and does not stay wet permanently. Smart, right?
Finally, and this is probably what was most lacking in previous models: the application now allows you to define "anti-washing" zones. And that is good! If the S5 Max is not able to detect rugs and carpets on its own, it suffices to delimit its zones which will only be avoided when the robot is equipped with its washing system. In suction mode, he will therefore not forget them. Not bad, even if we expect a more evolved system in the future, like what we find on Deebot Ozmo 900 et Ozmo 920 from Ecovacs.
“Another interesting innovation, the S5 Max deactivates its pump when it passes over an area that has already been washed. " The Alexians
Suction: the most efficient at Roborock!
No surprise from this point of view, the Roborock S5 Max is the worthy heir of its predecessor and displays more than honorable performances with a developing engine 2 Pa for a suction flow rate measured at 8.5 L / s in max mode (5.2 L / s in eco, 136.2 L / s in balanced, 7.6 L / s in turbo)! Yes, you read that correctly, it's more than the S6 (7,1 L / s in max mode) or than the S5 (8 L / s in max mode), and you might as well tell you right away, you can feel it from the first cleaning. Note that these measurements are much more interesting than just evoking the theoretical power, as we explained to you at the end of 2019 in our file on best robot vacuum cleaners on the market, which in reality does not predict the efficiency of the robot. The proof is that all three of these robots have a motor creating a vacuum of 2 Pa, but ultimately very different suction flow rates. We therefore remind you: the power in Pascal is not a significant data!
An enduring and silent robot
Like its predecessors, the Roborock S5 Max offers great autonomy, beating its predecessor, the S6, yet already very enduring. Able to evolve up to 180 minutes in silent mode, he proposes 150 minutes of battery life in balanced mode, the one you will probably use the most. The result is the capacity for the robot to perform up to 200 m² of cleaning.
[…] The Roborock S5 Max offers a good range, the S6, yet S6 already very enduring. The Alexians
Noise level, on the other hand, it is less good. Offering a greater air flow, it is logically noisier. But, rest assured, the values remain quite reasonable and within the industry average, with around 60 dB (A) in silent mode, 67.5 dB (A) in balanced mode, 68.9 dB (A) in turbo mode et 71.9 dB (A) in max mode. As a reminder, the S6 varies between 56 and 71 dB (A) and the Deebot Ozmo 920 between 53 and 70 dB (A).
Our opinion on the Roborock S5 Max
In practice, there is no doubt about the question, the Roborock S5 Max excels and leaves nothing, or almost nothing, along the way. Very agile with the obstacles which he approaches with meticulousness, he is formidably efficient. From there to say that it constitutes the best choice in the brand's range, there is only one step… That we are going to take! Yes, it is clear that it would almost be depreciating the Roborock S6 which, until then, ranked second in our selection of best robot vacuum cleaners on the market.
Whether it's navigation or mopping up, the Roborock S5 Max is the leader in 2-in-1 robots. If, until then, the Deebot Ozmo 920 had our preference, we have to recognize that Roborock has outperformed Ecovacs with a finally convincing washer ! In the end, it would therefore seem that this robot is able to take the first place in our general classification, we will talk about it soon because an outsider, the Proscenic M7 Pro, also seems set to achieve a feat!
