Connected watches, compatible with Alexa It goes without saying, this is a category that we have not yet tested. Well, we filled that gap by testing the new Versa 2 from Fitbit. A watch that appeals both for its design and its functionality. Fitbit is a brand already well known in the field of watches aiming to be your personal sports coach.
Apart from the aspect of functions that are already inherent in this type of watch: physical activity, heart rate, nutritional elements or time and quality of sleep, it is the integration of Spotify and especially our favorite AI, Alexa, which appear in this new version. Let's see if Fitbit and Alexa go hand in hand.
Fitbit Versa 2: an aesthetic connected watch
Our Fitbit Versa 2 is delivered to us in a large cardboard box and glossy of the most beautiful effect. The dimension of the photo occupies almost the entire box and the part corresponding to the dial is slightly plasticized. The color of the chosen bracelet (burgundy) is printed. This is the color requested, but others are available.
At the bottom left, the pictograms of the voice control, Music and contactless payment. On the back of the box, we find information about the functions of the watch itself (battery life, number of sports listed for data recording, etc.).
On one side, the mention Amazon Alexa informs us that it is indeed our favorite assistant who is taken care of and that we can question. Finally the color of the bracelet is written (if ever you are color blind).
On the other side of the carton it is stated that two bracelets are delivered (small or large); ideal because everyone will find a bracelet to the desired size. Also mentioned are technical information indicating the need a smartcompatible phone with a link to the Fitbit site to verify this. THE'waterproof up to 50m andbattery life up to 5 days (depending on use) are also indicated on the same side.
Now that we've taken a look at our beautiful (even very beautiful) box, let's see what's in it. It is after all for its content that we acquired it. Once opened we discover the Fitbit Versa 2 smartwatch in a rectangular box of very thick and rigid cardboard, half of which is closed with a thin and flexible cardboard cover.
The whole contains: the Versa 2 smartwatch, on which the smallest of the bracelets is already mounted, is placed around a very hard plastic-coated cardboard base. the second bracelet of a longer length is placed in the part with the closed lid with a new small box (yes yes, it is the 3rd box, but the last one promised) containing the loading dock as well as a small flyer that tells us how to get started quickly with our Fitbit Versa 2 or change the bracelet.
Finally, by lifting the support containing the charger with USB cable, we discover a small multilingual information booklet including French. In this small document, which only has four pages for our language, no information on the use of our watch but an invitation to go to the site if necessary before any return to the seller.
Let's take a closer look at the Fitbit Versa 2:
Already its shape: square! It's not that common. We see more round and more massive model. To own a round one, you have to admit that the difference is significant. The Fitbit Versa 2 is much smaller on the wrist and much thinner, it is easier to hide under a shirt without feeling stuck at the bottom of the sleeve. It's silly, but it's a little more appreciable to be able to lower your sleeve entirely without being stopped and not being able to close the sleeve on the wrist… Especially since we are not going towards summer.
The case is therefore square, in aluminum, measuring 4 cm side et 1.2 cm thick for a total weight of 41g. The only button of the watch is located on the left while the microphone is placed on the right. Case and buckle (also in aluminum) are in a copper tone in harmony with the colors of the silicone strap. The finesse of the latter is appreciable. It is thinner than our comparison watch but no fear that it will tear, it will not overflow around the watch. The screen, touch-sensitive of course, is of the OLED type. The autonomy of the lithium-ion battery is announced up to 5 days (depending on the use of course). An appreciable duration at first glance, but remains to be seen in real conditions.
The charger / dock is made of plastic and takes the form of a clip on which the watch is clipped. The cable length is 80cm.
Technical sheet :
Fitbit Versa 2: a compatible watch Alexa
Installation: patience is a key word (count the night)
The first thing that the flyer tells us is to install thefitbit app, something we hasten to do.
Once opened, we must proceed to the creation of an account. We must first indicate which watch we want to configure, then we can proceed to create an account in a very classic way (email address and password) and accept the conditions of use. On the next page, you will describe yourself by indicating your contact details, and at the bottom of the page you can click on " create an account ".
In the next step, it will be necessary activer the geolocalisation to continue and a code will be sent that must be saved on the new page.
The next step will be to connect the watch to a home Wi-Fi network to download updates. And there, we will have to be patient. The download is incredibly long ... Count four hours depending on your connection, but keep in mind that it will be limited by the capabilities of Bluetooth anyway. Unfortunately, you can't track the progress of the update with the watch in the charging cradle, unless you remove it every now and then. Launched in the evening, we recovered the watch with the update made the next morning. Alexa being integrated into our watch, it will have to be associated with our account Amazon. Turn on Bluetooth for Versa 2 sync. Fitbit recommends that you turn off all other Bluetooth devices to connect.
At the end of the installation, Fitbit offers a small tutorial to change the bracelet and the content of the various menus that can be found depending on the sweep that is done and also refers to maintenance.
Once all these steps are done, the Fitbit application opens and you have to go to your email and confirm your email address to activate your account. We then discover all the menus available in the application and we can configure them at will to organize them at our convenience.
A health and well-being watch
Like any self-respecting Fitbit watch, the Versa 2 obviously comes with many features dedicated to sport, health and well-being. Logic is the trademark of Fitbit!
We thus have the possibility of consulting the recordings of our "sleep score", the number of steps taken, the number of floors climbed, the calories burned during the day, the time of activity, etc ... All this is displayed on the home page " today " by having made the choices of the items that will appear there (and clicked on modify).
Thus, it is also possible to display on the opening page, in the lower part, numerous data concerning the sleep, physical activity, the follow-up of the cardiac frequency, number of steps on time, information about female health, weight tracking, water and food consumption (for these last two parameters, you will obviously have to enter them yourself). Finally, in the watch menu, it is possible to access various parameters, in particular the association with Alexa and his account Amazon. By scrolling down, this last page, we have access to the notifications of the applications that our watch will send to us.
And with Alexa So what happens ?
For solicit Alexa, it is necessary topress the single button included in the watch. The first test carried out is classic: asking for the weather forecast… We obtain the weather forecast, which is displayed well, which guarantees that the compatibility is very real.
We have also tested:
- The routines: example, outside the home, of a request to open a shutter at Alexa. As we walked through the door, we saw that it had done well and that our shutter was open. Ditto for turning on or off a light bulb, the routines run smoothly from the watch Fitbit Versa 2.
- A change of scenes: by zapping on a TV whose scenarios are configured via a Broadlink RM Pro + hub, the test for which you will find here. Ditto for the different scenes present in your application Alexa.
- Adding an item to the shopping list: a very practical feature. As we turned on the washing machine, we realized that we would soon run out of laundry, but had nothing to write down orEcho device nearby ... But the watch connected to Alexa at wrist ! Immediately thought, immediately done: « Alexa, add laundry to my shopping list ”. And hop ! No more forgetting! On the other hand from our watch, cannot remove an item from the list, we are invited to go to the app Alexa.
- Display your skills : surprising, but possible! So, of course we do not have our list of skills displayed on our dial, but the first of the 3 most popular skills, Alexa offers us to open it. On the other hand, if a skill starts from the style "Em… .r the world", even if you request a new action, it will be another definition that will appear on our watch. To exit the skill, you will have to say: stop.
- It is also possible to ask Alexa traffic status to get to his office for example.
- Receipt of Notifications alerts is possible on the watch (example with the compatible camera Alexa Netvue OrbCam:
Unfortunately incompatible, the communication functions specific to Alexa, like Drop-in, calls since there is no speaker, or sending messages, cannot be used. It's a shame, but common on compatible devices Alexa.
Let's see for the music now, because a large majority of our friendly Facebook community loves music and has appliances Amazon Echo such asAmazon Echo Show 5 tested here and on which we can also see the lyrics of our songs that we have chosen on Amazon Music. On our watch, only Spotify and Deezer are available, provided you have a premium account and therefore paid (subscription at 9.99 € / month).
Use Spotify on your Fitbit Versa 2 watch:
Always wanting to help our dear Alexians as much as possible, we took a free premium subscriptiont for 3 months at Spotify to get a taste of what it looks like with our Fitbit Versa 2.
- From the Fitbit app, log into your account or create one.
- Once in Spotify, you can find your playlists and change songs knowing that you have to press once to change the song, twice for the previous one. And forward the music! Finally, if you take a Spotify or Deezer subscription only, because the service Amazon Music is not integrated by Fitbit even though the Versa 2 integrates Alexa. A somewhat incomprehensible point given the partnership forged by the manufacturer of connected watches and Amazon. Hopefully this is just a timing issue and in the future we can choose this music streaming service just like the others.
And we can receive our music in our headphones without problem:
La receiving messages (SMS in particular) is also done without problem (check in the Fitbit app on your profile, then by tapping on the photo of your watch, and further down on notification that the SMS parameter corresponds to your use). Same for calendar notifications. Can also be received on email notifications (Gmail only a priori) and incoming calls. Unfortunately, the watch does not have a keyboard, but on Messenger for example, shortcuts are offered to you as well as fairly practical quick answers.
Regarding autonomy, an important point for a connected watch. During our tests, the watch asked to be recharged after 3 days of use, which seems a bit tight, Fibit promising up to 5 days of battery life. However, keep in mind that this was a first charge and we used it a lot for the purposes of the test. In addition, this manufacturer data is always biased by the lack of use of Bluetooth for example, yet essential to the Fitbit Versa 2. Five days of autonomy therefore seem a little exaggerated in "normal" use, bet on four! Finally, note that a battery logo which flashes red when the battery is low, but you can also be notified by email.
