Our opinion on the Fitbit Versa 3 connected watch

Fitbit unveiled its connected watch last year Fitbit Versa 3. This new version bringing the GPS which was sorely lacking in its previous model and which is now compatible with the two main voice assistants on the market, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. The brand that was created in 2007 was indeed bought by Google, so it is not surprising that the Mountain View voice assistant is offered there. After the test Fitbit Versa 2 that we made last year, let's see if this new opus remedies our few grievances.

Fitbit Versa 3: your voice assistant on the wrist

Pleasant, the packaging shows the visual of the watch Fitbit Versa 3 with a few specifics on the back, mentioning among other things GPS, heart rate monitoring or the display of notifications, etc. The sides indicate for one the model of the watch, here with a black aluminum case and an equally black strap, and for the other the characteristics and the'autonomy up to 6 days.

When opened, the presentation of the watch is elegant and looks like a triptych. In the left part, the charger and on the right the second size L bracelet. In the center, the famous Fitbit Versa 3 is already equipped with a size S bracelet.

This connected watch is accompanied by a magnetic charger, small in size compared to the Versa 2, which features four points connections which are positioned on those on the back of the watch. Recharging for 1 day takes 12 minutes. Power is supplied by USB type A socket. A quick start guide and a safety information booklet are included.

The strap closure system, in synthetic, does not take the classic Versa 2, but a more recent and easy to handle system.

The face of the Fitbit Versa 3 is a square of 4 cm side for 1.24 cm thick. The whole thing weighs 20 grams.

By placing the dial in front of you, you have:

  • On the right edge: the loudspeaker. You will be able to hear Alexa or Google Assistant will answer you as it does at home, on an Echo or on your smartphone, but also answer calls.
  • On the left edge: the microphone. It is placed in a rather low part, oriented on the wrist. But the sound of our voice does not seem muffled for as much to have tested it either in voice command or in call, we are heard distinctly.
  • On the back: the contact pads. for recharging and the various sensors for coaching.

Fitbit Versa 3: installation and use

The Fitbit app

The installation of Fitbit Versa 3 remains the same procedure as for the Versa 2. If you do not have a Fitbit account already created, you must first install the Fitbit application available on Android ou iOS  then create an account, accept the terms of use. Fill in your details: name / date of birth / height / weight / sex. There, you are asked to choose the Fitbit watch model to configure.

In case you have already a watch of the brand, the problem will be that the application will force you to replace the old watch with the Fitbit Versa 3! You cannot have two watches on the same email account with Fitbit. The only solution, if you want to have several "active" watches, create different accounts. But if you integrated them on the same smartphone, this involves disconnecting / reconnecting each time you want to switch from one to the other since a single application cannot be installed and do not plan to clone the application with a second account, you will not have no access to Wi-Fi, bluetooth or firmware update settings. Only possible solution if possible, use a second smartphone.

To continue with the installation, it is recommended to charge the watch. Activate geolocation and then Bluetooth to allow the Versa 3 to sync.

You can add MobileTrack as a new device. It takes place in your account under the Versa 3. If you don't wear the watch, but you have your smartphone on you, The sensors it integrates will allow certain functions to be taken into account to keep the activity log, such as the number of steps, the distance covered or the number of calories burned… but it cannot not do everything. For example, it cannot count the number of floors climbed, the recording of sleep or the time spent in the active zone.

When the installation is complete, it is suggested to choose a voice assistant. You have the choice between Alexa and Google Assistant. Only one of them can be supported by the watch. But nothing prevents to alternate.

In the application, from the "Today" menu, click on your account at the top left, (where you can put a nice photo of yourself), then click on Versa 3. There, several configuration icons are available, including the choice of voice assistant.

With Amazon Alexa

Select the voice assistant and enter your username and password Amazon….there it's done !

For Google Assistant

It's the same principle when you enter your Google account. The application Google Assistant must also be installed on the smartphone to be able to use it via the watch.

Here is your voice assistant is installed on the watch and will respond to your requests when you press and hold on the left edge (which is not really a button) without even having to pronounce « Alexa "Or" Ok Google "and that's not bad. It makes the interaction with his watch more discreet. You will be able to interact in the same way as with a device Amazon Echo or Google Nest to ask questions about the weather, act on your connected objects to turn on / off the TV, a light bulb etc ...

The Fitbit Versa 3 takes full place in the app Alexa as an Echo device. The interaction doesn't stop there, just activate the skill Fitbit. Indeed, via Alexa, since we put it in voice assistant, it is possible to obtain data such as, the number of floors climbed;

  • Ask Fitbit how many floors I've climbed (or climbed yesterday or Sunday, for example) and your favorite voice assistant will tell you about your performance.
  • Ask Fitbit how many steps I have taken…: you will get an answer with data which, however, is not necessarily identical to what is displayed on the “Today” page of the application. The answer is “rounded”. So for 1901 not, Alexa, answers 2000 steps taken.

With Google Assistant

No need to activate an add-on since it does not appear in devices.

When it comes to interaction with the Fitbit app, it's not a panacea. Ask for the number of steps taken yesterday and you are directed to "here are some results from the web (??)" with a link to the Fitbit forum for bug management….

But the voice commands for the home automation work fine, with just a little more latency observed than by asking via Alexa.

Since the application of smartphone, on the same page where you clicked to configure the voice assistant, you access the settings:

  • clock face : to choose the appearance of the clock: digital, analog from a wide choice of models or if you wish, like putting a photo in the background. In the latter case, the model must be selected and installed: P offered in the "By Fitbit" category. Click on " Parameters", Then on" Pick a background image »And choose a photo from your gallery. It will come to be imported into the watch.
  • Apps : you access a library of compatible applications classified by theme: health, lifestyle, etc ... but beware, free and paid are mixed. Some that were free become chargeable like Fit for Hue that we were able to test on our Fitbit Versa 2 and which has since become chargeable. It is true that these are applications developed by members and not official applications made available by brands.
  • Video : to choose your music service Spotify or Deezer but this can only be used on the watch with a premium subscription.
  • Wallet : up to 6 cards can be registered for contactless payment in NFC.
  • How to use : that says what it is.
  • Accessories : takes you to the Fitbit store

In the lower part you can:

  • Sync now : you can "manually force" the synchronization between the watch and the smartphone for the data to pass. It is even regularly necessary.
  • Wrist calls : authorize the use of the microphone and the loudspeaker as well as call alerts (can be activated from this page or via “Notifications” below. To take calls via the watch, the smartphone still remains to be carried, at a maximum of 10 meters.
  • Notifications : in addition to activating the reception of calls, SMS (to choose between Messages, Messenger or WhatsApp by default), the calendar and the mails (to choose between Gmail and Outlook) you will activate the applications to which you give the authorization of 'send notifications to your watch such as Twitter, Messenger, your cameras, alarms, etc. The list of all your applications is offered, you can define which ones you want to activate. But be aware that the more notifications there are, the faster the battery will need to be recharged. Especially sincefrom 25% you receive low battery alerts.....
    • You can also enable voice responses when you receive notifications (very convenient) or reply with a predefined message like: I cannot reply for the moment. (5 answers are configured but can be modified).
  • Cardiac frequency : if you know your upper and lower limits, you can save them and activate the sending of a notification as soon as the watch sensors exceed the defined thresholds.
  • Move more : regular reminders before the end of the hour to reach a goal of 250 steps. A little annoying. Quickly deactivated.
  • Primary objective : Steps, Distance, Calories, Floors or Minutes in active zone. It's up to you to choose what you want
  • Positioning on the wrist : Indicate whether you wear the watch on your dominant wrist or not for the best possible results. If you are right handed and worn on your left wrist, indicate " non-dominant". This indication should normally improve perceptions of activities and their records.
  • Wi-Fi settings : takes over your Wi-Fi account
  • Device lock : allows you to enter a PIN code for the wallet to secure the NFC account.

The settings are numerous because the watch is not only a tracker for sports. You have to take the time to go through each menu to make the appropriate configurations and not hesitate to change them as you use them.

When you open the application you arrive in the menu " Today »On the statements of the various selected items. The configurations of each theme are made by going to their account by clicking on the photo of their profile at the top left then by going to " Activity and well-being" page (in French).

The page " Today "Therefore displays the log of your activities by bringing the chosen module to the foreground (but which can be changed by clicking on" change »Which will remove it from the display but which will be resubmitted if you click on modify and will take place on the lower line. It's a carousel, so nothing is lost.

By clicking on the arrow to the left of Today, you can access the statements for the previous days. There doesn't seem to be any limit to going back in time.

The most striking theme is that of sleep. The various parameters to be entered are always made via " Account "Then" Activity and well-being". There, enter your data such as your sleep time objective etc ... and you will read the results of the readings on the menu page " Today" page (in French).

We tested the function by comparing it with the Fitbit Versa 2 and the readings are about the same within a few minutes.

In " Track your exercise", By clicking on the" + », On the right, you activate the GPS for one of the functions: run, walk or hike. You will then obtain a statement of your journey which will be recorded by clicking this time on the function.

Will be recorded depending on whether the GPS is active or not:

  • Without GPS: the duration of the activity (the registration threshold for an activity is 10 min), the number of calories burned, the heart rate, the time spent in the active zone
    • By clicking on a statement you get the details of the heart rate zones and the minutes in the active zone

  • With GPS: the course, the distance, the average per kilometer, the heart rate, the time spent in the active zone.
    • In addition, by clicking on the course, you also access detailed information about the cardio zone and the rhythm.

In " health indicators »You access the gross statement for the last 7 days:

  • Respiratory rate
  • Heart rate variability
  • Skin temperature:  not to be confused with body temperature. It takes 1 week of wearing the watch at night to obtain the first results.  The variations can be influenced by the temperature of the room, the clothes worn etc ...
  • SpO2. You must take a subscription premium to have the statement and the trends over 30 days…. The statement does not have medical diagnostic value and is only informative. It is the reflection of the light by the red and infrared sensors placed under the dial projected on the skin and the blood vessels which make it possible to carry out the measurement.
  • Heart rate at rest

The other menus available at the bottom of the page today:

  • Discover : refers to the application gallery or allows access to training sessions accessible only with the premium paid offer.
  • Community : to join other Fitbit users
  • Premium : offers you the monthly (8.99 €) or annual (79.99 €) subscription. It's up to you to see if your sporting involvement justifies taking out a subscription.

In use, it is pleasant to wear even if it looks less feminine than the previous version, which was thinner and offered a more classic strap when closing. There it is about two loops or it is necessary to bring in the adjustable part while also having it crocheted in a notch. New to us this way of proceeding, it poses no more problem than that.

We have not tested compatible music services but subject to subscription. We hope that in the future that ofAmazon Music will also be compatible ...

We appreciated the use for taking calls or reading notifications that quickly arrive on the dial. One glance and presto!

Using the voice assistant Alexa that we have privileged is done as with any other device Amazon Echo, whether for home automation, addition to the shopping list or questions asked.

The sports coach should satisfy the athletes with the many statements offered and the recognition of many sports.

The rather intensive use of notifications and the active screen mode considerably reduce the autonomy, even if you receive alerts as soon as the remaining percentage reaches 24%. We had to recharge it every 48 hours. But this is done relatively quickly, allow 1h10 for a full reload.

Our opinion on the Fitbit Versa 3

In conclusion, the Fitbit Versa 3 is a total success. With its pleasant and compact design, it will delight both women and men, and why not your children.

By integrating a loud speaker for taking a call, as well as a GPS will delight all athletes, Fitbit responds to the main complaints we had about its Versa 2. Our only regret comes from the fact that it is not possible to add a second Fitbit connected watch to the same account.

Quoted " Smart », The joint integration ofAmazon Alexa and Google Assistant is a good idea, the assistants being always ready to answer your requests by simply pressing on the edge. No need to name them, which is good and quite discreet. The library of the Fitbit application is also more and more generous in applications, although we regret that the vast majority are paid. However, the prices are quite reasonable.

In short, the Fitbit Versa 3 is an alluring watch and that we adopted without difficulty or reluctance, although the announced autonomy is not there. Available between € 199.95 and € 229.95 depending on the model of bracelet chosen, you have a sports coach, your voice assistant and manual freedom allowing you to walk around with the smartphone only in pocket or purse.

Simple user and novice fallen into the pot Alexa, this one fascinates me and thanks to the boys, Jean-Christophe and Alexien Modo, I learn a little more every day. Loving the different aspects ofAlexa, I turned to skills to share my discoveries with you.
