There are many connected temperature sensors. Whether they are integrated with an Echo device like the one in Amazon Echo 4 or independent and with hub like the SwitchBot Meter, there are also some that are Wi-Fi. weather station Kecheer.

Its product sheet promises us long-distance support of 70 meters, which would allow an outbuilding to be monitored from afar. Kecheer: the Wi-Fi weather station for Tuya / Smart Life

Unboxing

The Kecheer mini weather station comes in an insignificant little box, no frills. No illustration, let alone a photo, but as it concerns a Tuya white label, this is not very surprising. You will only find the type of container and the basic information.

But the main part being inside, let's open quickly. We find :

  • The Kecheer temperature / humidity sensor.
  • One screw for wall mounting.
  • A small operating mode in English but sufficiently well schematized so as not to pose any problem for the commissioning.

This sensor is small in size, but slightly larger than the Switchbot meter, is a square of only 6,3 cm x 6.5 cm x 2.8 cm for 74 grams. It comes without the necessary three AA batteries. The perimeter is in white ABS which allows it not to fear handling, unlike the plastic screen protection. Be careful, it is relatively thin and fragile and can mark if the fingernails hang over it ... The screen is of the LCD.

On the back, you have in the upper part in the center a recess to allow it to be suspended with the screw provided (which is only one centimeter long). The battery compartment cover slides off to accommodate the batteries. 3 AA batteries necessary for its operation.

On the top, the pairing / reset button. Below a small oblique support to allow better readability. Well thought !

The BOM screen

It is of the LCD type and you will find on it the information concerning:

  • The remaining battery charge
  • The quality of the Wi-Fi
  • Temperature
  • The humidity rate

Kecheer Wi-Fi temperature and humidity sensor

Installation and use

This little sensor works with the Swiss Army Knife app: Smart Life, available at Android ou iOS . To get started with it, we refer you to our tutorial Smart Life.

Place the batteries and if the Wi-Fi symbol on the screen does not flash, press the pairing button 5 to 10 seconds for reset (no longer, it cancels pairing mode). You then have 60 seconds to start the procedure.

Once on the home page of the application, press the "+" at the top right and select in the category "Security and sensors" In the center " Heat detector ". Enter your Wi-Fi password, confirm that the Wi-Fi symbol is flashing. The detector is recognized very quickly. It can of course be renamed by clicking on the pencil. The Wi-Fi signal on the sensor is now fixed.

The sensor takes place on the home page of the application. Let's click on the thumbnail. The first information comes up instantly but is not stabilized. The temperature / hygrometry sensor must be left in place for about twenty minutes for it to be operational.

Temperature

It is she who is proposed first. In the center, the temperature is displayed in numbers but also in the form of a graduated disc which will modulate according to the ambient air. In the lower part, it is a follow-up in the form of a graph.

humidity

By clicking on "Humidity", the same presentation is made, this time with the hygrometric data. But, here, the precision does not go after the decimal.

Clicking on " more time " or " more humidity »You get a detailed 24 hour reading, with a small arrow indicating the upward or downward movement If you prefer, you can select another graph from among week, month, year by clicking on "Date" at the top right.

The% indicated in parenthesis next to the temperature or humidity corresponds to the difference between the nearest number displayed on the line of the graph and that of the current situation.

So :

  • For temperature : 22.1 ° + 2% = 22.5 °, the temperature has increased by 2% when exceeding the new threshold.
  • For humidity : 66.7% - 8% = 61% rounded to 60%. the humidity level has reduced by 8% by passing the previous ceiling.

These are approximations, the device does not refine more.

On either page, put your finger on a specific place and you will have the temperature or humidity information for a particular time.

Click on one of the arrows <or> to modify the day / week / month / year.

Click on the pencil at the top of the page, you access the settings page with the possibility of renaming the Kecheer sensor. Although we subsequently proceeded to create an automation in the appropriate menu: “scenario” accessible from the main page, it does not appear in the “scenario and automation” section. Automation create goes back in the application Alexa but cannot be used. You can also create a shortcut on the home page of your smartphone which will then directly open the page of the device in the application Smart Life.

With Amazon Alexa

So let's say it right away, only the temperature information comes back.

For the temperature sensor to be displayed in the app Alexa, it is necessary to activate the skill Smart Life and bind the accounts. Once done, it appears directly in new devices but as you can see it will only be possible to question our favorite voice assistant to know the temperature of the place where it is placed.

  • « Alexa, what is the temperature of "temperature humidity sensor" [or name you gave it] »?

With Google Assistant

Here too, the add-on must be Smart Life is installed. If necessary, go find it by clicking on the "+" then « Configure a device«  and finally on « Works with Google« . With the magnifying glass search for " Smart Life ”and link the Google Home account to Smart Life. This being done, the sensor goes up instantly and takes place on the home page. You can integrate it into a room and rename it.

Google Assistant will respond the same asAlexa to give you the temperature and there is no question of routines here too.

Kecheer sensor: daily use of the mini weather station

If the installation on Smart Life is very simple and does not pose any difficulty, it must be recognized that subsequently it is not the main use that will be made of it, even if it is very visual, since the device can be interrogated by voice by Alexa or Google Assistant. At least for the only data available: the temperature. Moreover, if the reading of the temperature or the humidity on the central zone is understandable, the cutting of the gradations does not always seem logical. However, having the history is a good thing.

We compared the statements sent by the Kecheer weather sensor to those of Switchbot Meter in ZigBee and another more basic device. The two connected devices are strictly identical. The Wi-Fi sensor is even slightly more precise with regard to the hygrometric data since it pushes the information to the tenth, which the Switchbot Meter does not. As for the comparison with our old weather station, the temperature is more or less the same, it is the humidity level which is slightly different.

Regarding the reception distance, everything will depend on the configuration of the premises, the quality of the flow. It is therefore difficult to confirm or deny the distance. We tested our box at about forty meters away. The network running smoothly, we got the data.

In conclusion, Keecher offers a nice little box supported by Smart Life of Tuya. If you have other devices, you can easily create automations, which is great for freeing yourself from manual actions. Our biggest regret remains'lack of consideration by the voice assistants of humidity data or even the ability to create routines. If you are looking for a small Wi-Fi sensor, reliable and easy to install, this mini connected station is made for you. On the other hand, wait for a promotion because the price has grown overweight since we acquired it.
