Amazon announces the processing of voice commands Alexa locally

The announcement went almost unnoticed, yet it matters to smart speaker users Alexa. David Limp, Senior Vice President ofAmazon Devices & Services, recalled during the presentation of new products Amazon 2021 the importance of confidentiality for his company, before announcing the possibility soon offered to his customers to opt for a voice command processing Alexa locally...

Voice commands Alexa processed locally

Since the scandals concerning the processing of data at GAFAM, the company founded by Jeff Bezos has done a lot of work on the subject of confidentiality. On the one hand by being much more transparent, and on the other hand by giving users of their voice assistant the possibility of controlling their personal data from the application Alexa as on a dedicated portal about.

This year, Amazon has decided to go further by offering the possibility to customers who wish to opt for a local processing of their voice commands.

As you will surely understand, this means that the voice recordings of your orders Alexa will no longer have to be sent to the cloud to be executed. In other words, your speakers Amazon Echo will be able to interpret them directly. A notable change in strategy for the Seattle giant which will offer this possibility this year on its Echo 4 and Echo Show 10 U.S..

David Limp specified that the speakers concerned would initially be those carrying the chip Amazon AZ1 Neural Edge, and of course the new AZ2 which equips the brand new Echo Show 15, its teams working to make it possible on older models in the future.

Benefits of local voice control

The idea of bringing local voice control at Alexa is not really new since it is already possible, on speakers with an integrated ZigBee hub, to do so for simple home automation controls. But the interest of going further in local execution is manifold.

The first obviously concerns confidentiality. With local vocal processing, you won't have to worry about being listened to - or not, actually, but some still worry about it - since the vocal samples will simply be temporarily stored on the speaker and processed directly. without sending to the cloud. Alexa will therefore move to your home, to your speakers, and will no longer be only in the cloud.

The second interest seems to us, on the other hand, much more interesting. Indeed, with speakers Amazon Echo able to interpret the commands, we will no longer have to worry about possible network cuts that could damage our home automation. Finished the " sorry i have a little trouble understanding you "OfAlexa,  everything will now happen locally, at home, if your home automation is not in the cloud. In addition, we can expect latencies reduced to their strict minimum. Those with limited flow rates will therefore no longer see the light ring spinning in a vacuum before their bulb goes out!

Finally, the latter interest should hardly move you, but it is crucial for Amazon which will thus be able to reduce the load on its servers. Indeed, although the e-merchant is also the global cloud leader, the millions of customers using Alexa on a daily basis necessarily cost him dearly. By better controlling this important item of expenditure, Alexa could become much more profitable ...

Fascinated by Alexa since the day I received it in beta test, I gradually became passionate about the subject, before deciding to go further by creating a site with Jean-Christophe. An activity that allows me to quench my thirst for new technologies and share my discoveries about the nicest of communities: Les Alexiens.
